Birthday Bash: DIY special occasion décor with Crepe Paper Flower Cones

I cannot imagine a more beautiful way to make a party special than with a pair (or more) of these gorgeous, Crepe Paper Flower Cones. The creamy, flower topiary with the glistening, golden button accents would be lovely for DIY wedding décor, too. Designer Dina Rossi made the smaller Crepe Paper Flower Cone in shades of pink for an ombré effect, and you could easily change it up to match your own favorite color scheme. In other news, designer and artist Laura Kelly joins in the birthday celebration this week with her Birthday Celebration Wreath! Lots of crafty fun today, and another giveaway!

How pretty are these flowers?

To make Crepe Paper Flower Cones, you’ll need:

  • STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: 12” or 18” cones, or other size of your choice
  • Crepe paper in your choice of colors; we used:
    • White and cream for the 18” cone
    • Light, medium and dark pink, plus white, for the 12” cone
  • Optional:
    • White & cream cone: Assorted gold buttons; light pink crepe paper
    • Pink ombré cone: Pearl head pins
  • Thick, white craft glue
  • Tools needed: Scissors; straight pins

These would make a party (or bridal shower) special! DIY Crepe Paper Flower Cones on CraftsnCoffee.com.

Dina randomly mixed the white and cream crepe paper when she made the flowers.

White & Cream Cone:

  1. Optional: Wrap the cone in pink crepe paper, and pin and glue the paper to the cone. Trim paper around the bottom and top of the cone, so the paper is even with the top and the bottom.
  2. Create an assortment of 40 – 45 flowers, mixing and matching layers of cream and white crepe paper. The final number you need will depend on how tightly together you arrange the flowers on the cone. Vary the diameter of your flowers from 4” in diameter to 2-1/4”. You’ll use the larger flowers around the bottom of the cone, and the smaller ones on top.
  3. Glue a button to the center of each flower.
  4. Arrange the first row of flowers around the bottom of the cone, pinning the flowers in place. (Using pins will make it easier to rearrange the flowers, if needed, as you go.) Continue adding flowers around the cone, working from the bottom to the top. Use the smaller flowers closer to the top.

The buttons beautifully finish off the flowers.

Pink Ombré Cone:

  1. Optional: Wrap the cone in pink crepe paper, and pin and glue the paper to the cone. Trim paper around the bottom and top of the cone, so the paper is even with the top and the bottom.
  2. Make five styles of flowers, for the five rows. The flowers vary in size from 3-1/4” on the bottom to 2-1/4” on top.

  • Row 2:  Dark pink outer petals; medium pink inner petals; white centers
  • Row 3:  Medium pink petals with white centers
  • Row 4: Medium pink outer petals; light pink inner petals; white centers
  • Row 5 (top row): Light pink petals with white centers

    Hi Sharon,
Happy Birthday to STYROFOAM brand. So shocked to win and very excited!
I don’t know how you guys keep it fresh and the ideas constantly coming.
Thanks for the inspiration and I look forward to the ideas each week.
    Pam B.

    • Sharon says:

Congratulations, Pam! Thank you for joining in the birthday celebration! It’s such a creative community — there are always new ideas percolating everywhere! And oftentimes, its the readers here that keep me inpsired. Craft on! Sharon

  2. CraftyB says:

And more birthday fun!! Beautiful color possibilities with the delicate floral cones. A great idea for the dessert or cake table!!

    • Sharon says:

I’m so glad you could make it to today’s party! These Crepe Paper Flower Cones would be perfection on a sweets table! Thanks for the suggestion. Sharon

  3. I’ve never crafted with their styrofoam, but these are beautiful crafts to make! I love the cones with the flowers.

  4. Angie says:

Happy 75th Birthday Bash to Styrofoam! Woo Hoo! Let’s get this party started. Love this tissue paper flower towers craft. They would be great for bridal showers, baby showers, Mother’s Day, Birthdays, Wedding Anniversaries, and even for the holidays. Making it in red would be lovely for Christmas. Orange and yellow would be pretty for Thanksgiving. Thank you for sharing, Sharon!

    • Sharon says:

I agree — you could adapt these for seasons and holidays, too. I’m so glad you could make it to the party this week! Happy crafting! Sharon

  5. Nancy D says:

The last thing I made was decorated eggs for Easter. Though they had more of a spring theme. I like to keep decorations out for that entire season.

  6. LisaM6 says:

Those are beautiful. I am so going to buy some crepe paper to make one.
I will admit my last project using styrofoam was for my mom. I crocheted 35+ red flowers with a lollipop center for her Red Hat Ladies.

    • Sharon says:

Love, love this idea, Lisa, and I bet your mom and her friends did, too. You’ll understand this one — my mind immediately went to “hmm, once the lollipops are done, what can you do with the crocheted flowers? Make a pin . . .??” LOL! Happy crafting! Sharon

      • LisaM6 says:

Pins, bookmarks, barrettes, necklaces or headbands. I was thinking the same thing. She has extras and told me I could sell them at my next show. lol I might try the farmers market again.

      • Sharon says:

🙂 It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Love these flower cones – always wonder where all your ideas come from!!

    • Sharon says:

🙂 I’ve been crafting with STYROFOAM Brand Foam for so long now, that whenever I see a craft or gift idea, I always think about how we could make it with STYROFOAM. It’s an automatic reflex any more! I’ve also found that ideas pop into my head when I take walks — does that happen for you, too? Sharon

  9. My most recent adventure was creating a Birthday Topiary for my Mother on her Birthday! I had so much fun decorating it with a variety of ribbons, flowers, beads and added quite a few snack sized Snickers bar and used a special antique small creamer to support it all. She loved it and when I offered to occasionally take it and update it for various holidays, seasons or fun events…she laughed at me and said no that I would just have to make her a completely different one time and time again. I followed one of your tutorials, yet made it unique with my choices. Thank you so much for having all of these spectacular ideas and tutorials! Have a fantastic creative day!

    • Sharon says:

What a special birthday gift! And I love that you personalized it for your mom! If you can, send a photo, please. Thanks for sharing today. Sharon

  10. Katiria says:

SO excited to win Sharon! Thanks 🙂
You’re right those crepe flower cones are so beautiful for weddings, Sweet 16, a Latin Quinceanera or a birthday party with a garden theme. Keep the ideas coming!

    • Sharon says:

Can’t you picture a table lined with these trees? Or groups of the cones displayed throughout the venue? It would be a beautiful and inexpensive way to decorate, and guests could take the cones home as a memento, too. And think of the fun before the event when the girlfriends get together to help make the crepe paper flowers! So glad you like them! Thanks! Sharon

  11. Oh gosh! I think in my excitement to share my last projects I forgot to say how gorgeous these crepe paper flower trees are! The white one is so stunning! Very elegant and regal! I think I may have to get some crepe paper to give these a try in black, silver, gold and of course, white! TFS!

    • Sharon says:

I couldn’t agree more — Dina did a beautiful job! And when she added those buttons — wow! Finished with a flourish! Thanks so much, Barb.

  12. The last project I did using StyroFoam products was just a couple weeks ago. A friend called and asked me to make some decorations for her son’s 18th Birthday party and I jumped at the chance because he is like another son to me!
I made a StyroFoam cake (he hates eating cake but wanted a cake at his party) using 3 circles of varying sizes. I covered it with a thin layer of clay “fondant” and since he loves all things environmental I made trees, animals and bushes using different size foam balls. I rushed to get it done in time and forgot to take a picture of it but I am pretty sure that she has a photo or 2 and I will try to remember to ask her to email me with a photo.
I often make dolls with my granddaughter using small cones and small balls and fabric. They don’t last long under her 4 year old hands but she LOVES them! We are planning to make a little fairy scene for her baby doll to play with. She has become very “motherly” the last few months and if she has something then she needs a smaller version for her baby. I am loving seeing her creative side!
THis has been a fun party and I am sad to see it ending! Glad to know that the fun on this blog isn’t ending though!! I would miss it lots! Can’t wait till tomorrow to read all the responses to today’s post! Congratulations to Katiria on being yesterday’s winner!

    • Sharon says:

I would love to see photos of the cake — it sounds amazing! And very special! (Wait till you see Friday’s post . . .) You are making such happy memories for Jenna — she will always remember crafting with her grandma! Craft on, you two! Sharon
