A sweet, spa craft to celebrate the day, and a spa craft giveaway

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today is a day for pampering, which is why I’m sharing this beautiful, and sweetly scented, Vanilla Rose Pomander. The pomander is designed by spa crafting experts Jennifer & Kitty O’Neil, the talented pair behind the blog Running with Sisters. (Perhaps you remember their book Steampunk Chic?) And speaking of books, we have a giveaway today, but let’s make a sweet, Vanilla Rose Pomander first.

DIY spa crafts for scented pomanders

Vanilla Rose Pomander by the O’Neil Sisters.

To make a Vanilla Rose Pomander, you’ll need:

  • STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: 6” ball
  • Silk shantung fabric, 20” x 20” square in cream
  • Satin ribbon, 1-1/2” x 1 yd. in burgundy
  • Silk flowers: three, 3-1/2” red roses; six, 3” pink dogwood blossoms
  • Pearls, 10
  • Glitter, silver
  • Candle scents: vanilla and rose
  • Straight pins
  • Thick, white craft glue
  • Tools needed: Scissors; iron & ironing board; paintbrush; newspaper or shallow box lid; wire cutters (optional)

To make a Vanilla Rose Pomander:

1. Iron the silk shantung. Cut the fabric into a 20” diameter circle. Center the ball of STYROFOAM Brand Foam on the fabric and pull up two opposite sides to cover the ball. Pin at the top. Pull the opposite sides up and pin. Neatly fold and tuck the remaining fabric up around the ball and pin at the top.

2. To create a loop hanger, fold over 7” of the burgundy ribbon and tie a knot. Insert a pin next to the knot, and pin the ribbon to the ball; add a dab of glue, if needed. Wrap the remaining ribbon around the ball, and pin the other end to the top. Trim off excess ribbon.

how to make a scented pomander

If you’re making pomanders for gifts, change the flowers to match the recipients’ favorite colors.

3. Cut three silk roses from their stems. Dab the center of each rose with the rose scent and the vanilla scent. Let dry. Position the roses facing out and glue around the ribbon loop.

4. Cut the pink dogwood blossoms from their stems. Lightly brush craft glue onto the edges of the petals, applying more on some petals and less on others. Paint craft glue on the flower centers. Working over a newspaper or shallow box top, sprinkle with silver glitter. Let glue dry, and then shake off excess glitter. Glue two pearls to the center of each flower.

5. Tuck two dogwood blossoms between each rose, overlapping them, and glue in place.

I would treat my daughter and myself. My daughter is moving across the country in a few months and jam not sure when we will be able to see each other again.

  2. Rebecca Disher says:

The most deserving person I know of a spa day would be my sister. She has taken care of virtually everyone in our family at some point. She cared for our Grandparents for 2 1/2 YEARS. Our Mother for 9 1/2 YEARS (Liver Transplant) 2 different Aunts (Lung cancer and cirrhosis) during our Mothers illness. (They all lived in a different state.)
I was injured in an automobile accident 1 week after giving birth to my son. He is physically disabled with Arthrogryposis and Scoliosis and requires surgery every 3 to 6 months depending on growth. My sister took care of me as well as my son when we were released from the hospital. She still helps to care for my son (When my Husband and I are at work) due to his multiple surgeries which will continue until he is grown. He has 2 VEPTR rods in his back. I might add she has MS on top of all this. Never has she taken a day off, vacation nor expected anything in return. How she has managed to do all this for all these years is beyond us all. But we are all VERY grateful! None of us would have made it through without out her help. Yes I love my baby sister. 🙂

  3. Cynthia P. says:

I would treat myself and my mother to a trip to the spa. We’ve had a hard couple of months, what with bronchitis that didn’t want to let go of me, backaches that lasted a week, and the fact that my Mom’s arthritis has been acting up, along with her aching feet, and some new shoulder pain, a trip to the spa would do us a world of good!

  4. Jeanette says:

A day at a spa would be a blessing for my daughter. She has always been there for me; even though she has her own family problems to solve. She deserves more than one day actually.

  5. Birgit says:

I would treat my mother to a day at the spa. Sure thing I would join her then. 🙂 Believe it or not, but I have never been to a spa before, so this would be lovely for the two of us.

Thanks also for the chance to win such goodies. And — I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

  6. Debbie Kaste says:

I would love to treat my friend to a da
Y at the spa. She has been going thru a rough time with the loss of a family member and a little pampering would be wonderful for her.

I love the O’Neil sisters and follow their adventures in Create and Decorate magazine! I get soo jealous of the fun flea markets they go to! I would treat my favorite Aunt to a special spa day. I lost my mom at a early age and she stepped right in took over that role in my life. I was not always a easy kid, and for that alone she would deserve a very special spa day!!

    • Hi Donna,
Thanks so much for following our flea market adventures! Your aunt sounds wonderful. If you can’t treat her to a special spa day, maybe you two can make spa crafts together. We find spending a day with the wonderful scents and pretty materials is like a having a spa day! Cheers! J&K

  8. Donna O'Neil says:

I would treat my husband. We haven’t gone to the spa in ages.

  9. Jane Powers says:

Hello, Sharon & Happy Valentine’s Day! This is difficult for me to admit, but I would love to treat myself to a day at the spa! My 2013 New Year’s Resolution is to learn and understand what changes I need to make in my life (work in progress for sure!) One way is to be more kind to myself. This is very challenging for me to do and for many of us with families, working, volunteering in our church and community. So… as scary as this is to admit, I would like to win a day at the spa. Love Crafts ‘n Coffee ! Jane

    • Sharon says:

You’re right, it’s very hard to find the time for yourself sometimes! You know what they say though, if mama ain’t happy, nobody’s happy! Here’s to more time for you, Jane. Sharon

  10. paula collins says:

  13. Barbara MacAskill says:

I think my neighbor Kathy, a teacher, deserves a spa day more than anyone else that I know! She is loved by students, staff and parents alike. She goes above and beyond for her students. She has had a rough time of it and so I feel she would deserve a spa day! I would love to win both/or one of these books. Thank you for the chance to win!

  14. Kerri says:

Oh! What a wonderful book. I’m loving all the great craft ideas coming my way.

  15. Nancy Carr says:

I would treat my best friend to a day at the spa. She always is there to support my dreams.

  16. LisaM6 says:

Ahh, what a great pomander…vanillia is my favorite scent.
I would give my oldest sister a trip to the spa, as she needs a little tlc right now.

  17. melle e says:

this will sound selfish…. I know. But the thing is… a few years ago I got sick and spent a year on chemo and can’t work any longer. my family has been wonderful. And I do everything in my power to take care of and spoil them to the very best of my abilities. But I have also let go of all the little things I used to have done for myself. Hair cuts, manis and pedis. waxing my eye brows…

I would LOVE to have a day to pamper myself and feel pretty… so that I could come home and resemble the man my husband married and the mom my kidlet adored.

  18. mplemel says:

I would treat my daughter Dena to a spa day. She is fighting breast cancer and has just finished chemo and is now faceing six weeks of radiation treatments. She deserves and could use a special day of pampering. Thank you for this wonderful giveaway.

    • Sharon says:

Your daughter sounds very deserving of some pampering, indeed. Please know that I will be thinking of you and your daughter and I hope she’s back in good health very soon. Please take care! Sharon
