Crafting with thumbtacks: Make a Thumbtack Monogram

Thumbtacks – do you give them much thought? Probably not (unless you need one and can’t find one anywhere in the house). However, when you craft with thumbtacks, these humble pins are suddenly transformed into an industrial chic fashion statement. Kim at Design Thoughts channeled this idea when she made her Thumbtack Monogram.

Kim made her thumbtack initial for less than $10! She started with a disc of STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam, but if you need a larger size, you can also use a 1” x 12” x 36” sheet. I have a few cutting tips for you, to keep it easy. Kim even had her young son Liam help out.

Kim used about 400 thumbtacks on her letter “S”.

I hope you’ll check out Design Thoughts to see how Kim made her Thumbtack Monogram. It’s pretty cool!

What would you spell out? Your initials? A word or a phrase? Maybe XOXO?

Happy crafting,

P.S. I just pinned wreath #100 to our Amazing Wreath Pinterest board. Are you following our board? If you’ve made a wreath with STYROFOAM Brand Foam, tell me about it and maybe you can be wreath #101!

How do you keep the thumb tacks from coming out. Some of mine fall out

    • Sharon says:

Dry a dab of glue on the end of the tack; once it dries, it will stay secure. I’d love to see your wall art! Do send an image, if you can. Happy crafting! Sharon

      • Sherry Roller says:

There is over 2,000 tacks in my wreath; I can’t dab glue on each one. I guess I could but it would take forever. Any ideas for after the wreath is finished. Something to spray on it to keep them in maybe.

I wish I had an answer for you and I’m sorry that I don’t! I’ve not had this problem and the tacks usually stay tight in the STYROFOAM Brand Foam. Maybe another reader will have an idea for you. Sharon
