How to make an easy (and romantic) Valentine Topiary

Raise your hand if you have a stash of pretty, leftover bits of fabrics and ribbons. I know I do, which is one reason why I fell in love with Rebekah Meier’s Sweet Valentine Topiary made with assorted fabrics and ribbons. Depending on your stash, you could style this as a shabby chic Valentine Topiary, or make it super elegant – it’s up to you. This is a super-simple Valentine craft, so why not whip up a pair for your Valentine mantel display?

To make a Sweet Valentine Topiary, you’ll need:

  • STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: 12” cone
  • Muslin fabric, ½ yd.
  • Fabric, lace, organza and ribbon scraps in pink, red, and white
  • Candleholder (optional)
  • Straight pins
  • Thick, white craft glue
  • Tools needed: Scissors; ruler

To make a Sweet Valentine Topiary:

1. Tear muslin into 1” strips. Wrap a strip around the cone, pinning each end. Continue wrapping the cone in the strips of muslin till it’s completely covered.

Layer on your prettiest fabrics and trims.

2. Center a 2” square of muslin on the top of the cone, and pin it to the sides of the cone.

3. Tear fabric scraps into 1-1/2” strips. Fold strips in half and tie around the cone; it’s o.k. to wrap a strip around the cone several times. Trim the ends of each fabric strip. Continue adding fabric strips till the cone is completely covered.

4. Wrap lace and ribbon around the cone, and tie or glue in place.

5. Tie strips of organza around the cone.

6. Optional: Display the topiary on a candleholder.

And you’re done. Pretty, isn’t it? Depending on what’s in your stash, you could change this up for springtime, Christmas or simply to match your living room. In fact, here’s how Patty Schaffer made her Patriotic Fringed Bandana Topiaries using a similar technique. Tell me – how would you change up this Pretty Valentine Topiary?

P.S. If you’d like to see more of Rebekah Meier’s pretty fabric art, I hope you’ll visit her new blog, RebekahMeier.com. She has a giveaway going on this week, too, and you could win a copy of her new book, More Fabric Art Collage, and one of her handmade journals. Her work is so pretty, don’t miss it!

Happy crafting.
